Sheba

Organized by Sheba Drew - Sharpei

Sheba needs an ear and dental surgery.
Sheba is a 3 year old Sharpei that was captured a little over a year ago wandering the streets of Galveston TX by the Animal Control Officer. She was taken to the local shelter to hold for only a few days. If she was not picked up, she would meet the Rainbow Bridge. She was pregnant, very gaunt from not eating, skin allergies in full session, ear infections in both ears, and many teeth worn to the numbs.

There was a rescue group got her the day before her time was up. The wonderful volunteers with the organization took her in, delivered and adopted the 4 babies, and put little Sheba (then Reba) in the foster care program. She was in the program in homes and the shelter until last July when we adopted her.

Her life with us has been very full, but she has fixable health issues and very traumatic separation anxiety. Her health issues that we have under control are her right ear is clear of infection, her eating patterns and diet have her weight at a good place for her size, she is very happy most of the time, her skin allergies are under control with diet and allergy medication, and she is part of the family.

Her biggest issue today is her left ear infection with a very odd strain of bacteria that is almost resistant to all antibiotics. We have had her middle ear cultured and the infection was treated with oral meds and drops for over 9 weeks. We are not sure if that infection is gone. Her outer ear is now being treated with drops and should clear. However the middle ear is still the potential issue. The Vet and Allergist have gone on record to say she needs an ear oblation. That surgery is at least $2500 and could be $6000 if there are complications.

After that surgery, Sheba will need to have dental surgery which will cost about $1000. The dental surgery is from trying to chew her way out of cages. How we know that is true is with her Separation Anxiety, she chews everything in sight. Sheba has grown much attached to us. If we leave her (at home with our other dogs) she tries to chew the trim off the doors to get out after us. She goes wild. We tried a cage once; she almost chewed through the bars of the cage and has worn her gums raw. So we do not cage her. Plus we found she was even more extreme when on the medication for the middle ear and know we are glad that is over.

We are working in the separation anxiety with small steps of behavior modification. It seems to be helping.

So I am sure you are saying why so much for a destructive and health laden dog?

Because she is a very sweet girl and so loving mostly when we are with her. I don't know who was with her in the start of her life, but I do know she would have been a joy as a baby and if we would have had her then, her health issues most likely would not have been to this extreme. We would have had her under the care of the vet from the beginning.

I do not want to give up on her, but I don't have the funds needed to fix her ear and teeth. I know she deserves a chance. I only want enough to fix her. If there are extra funds I will donate them to an animal charity that really needs help for their flock. There are many out there needed help.

If you donate, Sheba thanks you from the bottom of her heart and I do too.
